The relationship between Mr.Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet is an attraction of opposites. Jane Austen, as a novelist, weaves the lives and interactions of these two characters in an articulate and serendipitous narrative. The two characters are polar opposites in so many ways; their gender, class, demeanor and attitudes towards things such as money, love and happiness.

In Pride and Prejudice the practice of travelling, specifically walking is a great allegory for transition and movement between the two binary characters. This act serves as pivotal in the relationship Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth. In Elizabeth’s first, selfless walk she goes to Netherfield, sparking Mr. Darcy’s curiosity and affection. There are three additional walks after this that encourages affection between the two characters. The journey the characters take, both physically and metaphorically, move them from their opposite situations and viewpoints. These two solid attitudes are softened and diluted through the cathartic exercise of walking and the closeness and progression it inspires in them.
