The following extract (in edited form) is taken from Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Read the extract carefully and then answer the questions which follow.

Background to this extract:

In this scene,, Romeo hides in the Capulets' garden and watches Juliet. Juliet talks to herself and declares she loves him. She is shocked when he replies. Though they have only met that evening, they know that they love each other. Juliet promises to send a messenger to him in the morning to find out where and when their wedding will be.

SECTION 2 - Act 2, Scene 2, lines 1 to 157

 

The garden, beside the Capulet house.

 

ROMEO comes forward (reacting to MERCUTIO’s joking).

ROMEO

He jests at scars that never felt a wound.

 

Enter JULIET, coming to her window-balcony above.

ROMEO

– But soft! What light through yonder window breaks?

It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.

Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,

Who is already sick and pale with grief

That thou her maid art far more fair than she.

Be not her maid, since she is envious:
